VASAB is intergovernmental multilateral co-operation of 10 countries of the Baltic Sea Region in spatial planning and development, guided by the Conference of Ministers responsible for spatial planning and development, steered by the Committee on Spatial Planning and Development of the Baltic Sea Region and composed of representatives of respective ministries and regional authorities (Germany, Russia).
VASAB was established in 1992 in order to sketch a common vision for overall spatial structure of the Baltic Sea Region. In 1994 VASAB Secretariat was established.
The current strategic document is VASAB Long-Term Perspective for the Territorial Development of the Baltic Sea Region. VASAB work is focused on 3 key themes:
- Urban networking and urban-rural cooperation;
- Accessibility;
- Maritime spatial planning.
VASAB also acts as the Horizontal Action “Spatial Planning” coordinator within the EUSBSR for land-based spatial planning and co-coordinates maritime spatial planning jointly with HELCOM.
